Tired of alternating between watching music videos on the YouTube app and listening to audio on the music streaming service of your choice? Google thinks it has what you need.
The company launched YouTube Music on Monday, a subscription service that serves as the latest challenger to Spotify and Apple Music. The app is now available on iOS and Android in 17 countries including the US, UK and Australia.
YouTube Music is a catch-all app that brings together all the music content on YouTube with a huge catalog of audio for streaming. The service will terminate other Google subscription efforts, including the ad-free and paid video tier of YouTube Red and Google Play Music.
But if you’re already an Apple Music or Spotify subscriber, what could persuade you to make the switch? When asked this question at a press conference in London on Monday, global head of music for YouTube, Lyor Cohen, simply replied, “because it’s all here.”
YouTube is the largest video site on the Internet, with over 1.8 billion accounts logged in each month. Much of this “viewing” is actually listening to music, as music videos consistently rank among the most popular music videos on YouTube, making them one of the largest sources of listening to music. in the world. Google is indeed counting on the allure of offering a combination of video and music in one app as a reason for people to make the switch. No problem – you can search for them instead and the app should bring up the song you’re looking for. You don’t even have to be specific. Search for “Starbucks Fans,” for example and the app will display the video for‘s Blank space.
A paid subscription to YouTube Music Premium that gives you background listening, downloads, and ad-free experience costs $ 9.99 or £ 9.99 per month. If you are unsure about paying for the service, you can also sign up for an ad-supported version.
If you’ve already subscribed to Google Play Music, don’t worry – the two apps will continue to coexist until YouTube Music gets some of the more popular features from its predecessor and your likes and preferences can be synced.
A third option, simply called YouTube Premium, offers access to YouTube Music as well as a host of original, non-musical video content. Also launched on Monday, “YouTube Originals” is a list of new shows made in collaboration with popular YouTube personalities and celebrities that Google hopes you find so compelling you’ll shell out an extra £ 2 / $ 2 per month.
