  • Alice in Chains formed in Seattle in 1987.
  • "We Die Young" was a Top 5 metal track.
  • The first tour date was at Marquee Club in Westminster, CA in 1990.
  • They toured with (through various years): Iggy Pop, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Van Halen, Fishbone, Primus, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Dinosaur Jr., Arrested Development, and Babes in Toyland
  • Once nominated for American Music Award for Favorite Heavy Metal Artist.
  • Alice In Chains was once in the movie Singles.
  • The album title SAP came from a dream Sean Kinney had in which he said that the new album would be titled "Sap".
  • AIC was voted Best New Band in readers' polls in RIP Magazine & Guitar For The Practicing Musician.
  • Sean Kinney threw his coffee table out the window in June of 1992. His way of redecorating.
  • This will prove Layne's dedication to the band: In September of 1992, Layne ran over himself while popping a wheelie with his 4-wheel ATV. He broke his foot...BUT he completed the Ozzy Osbourne tour in a wheelchair and on crutches. He never missed a date.
  • AIC recored two songs for the Last Action Hero soundrack: "What The Hell Have I" & "A Little Bitter".
  • The band EP Jar Of Lies got the name after Jerry's famous high school science lab experiment: 2 jars of flies, 1 with food and the other without. The flies without food ate each other. Reportedly, Jerry's lifelong career indecision between music & entomology is settled on the spot.
  • When Sean Kinny played with Johnny Cash on "Time of the Preacher" for the Willie Nelson album, Johnny kept calling Sean "Sue".
  • They used to call themselves "Fuck", and according to many sources, they handed out condoms to the audience with the phrase "Fuck The Band" on the wrappers
  • One of Laynes earlier projects was a band who was to dress up like chicks and play hard rock, & they were to call themselves "Alice In Chains".
  • They were once called "Diamond Lie"

"We Die Young is about gang violence. That was something that was happening in Seattle, something that kinda opened our eyes. It just seemed like things were getting out of hand. Incidents where kids were getting shot, and getting their tennis shoes ripped off their dead bodies. It just seems like these kids are dying at younger and younger ages and getting involved in gang activity."
- Layne Staley

"We were on tour and the songs on Sap were songs that we had written...and Sean, during the process of working on these songs, had a dream that we had recorded these songs. And since they were a little bit milder than the rest of our material, in his dream the record was called "Sap," because it was sappy."
- Layne Staley

"We got famous off singing about a chicken."
- Sean Kinney about "Rooster"

"The Jar Of Flies thing and the Sap EP, that we put out before, those were just fun things...that's the whole point: just being able to do whatever you want to do."
- Jerry Cantrell

"We're gonna try to keep doing different things and having fun with it as long as we can."
- Jerry Cantrell

Layne: "This is the best show we've done in three years!"
Sean: "This is the only show we've done in three years."

Layne: "I used to walk six miles barefoot in the snow, to school. Did you know that?"
Someone in the audience screams: "Uphill !"
Layne: "Uphill. Good answer !" (smiling)

"I see a lot of you out there are dressed up like Kiss... but none of you are dressed up like me. What's up with that?"
- Layne

"I've always looked for the perfect life to step into. I've done all the work, taken all the paths to get where I wanted. But no matter where I go, I still come home me. At home I'm just Layne, a guy who has intrests that extend far beyond music. Music is the career I'm lucky enough to get paid for, but I have other desires and passions."
- Layne

"[Man In The Box] is kind of loosely based on media censorship. It's only my theory, so it's not a fact or a statement."
- Layne Staley, 1991

"You should see us on the road sometime by the end of the road"
- Jerry

"And when power ballads come back, we'll get big hair again"
- Jerry

"Rehearsals and this band are two words that don't really go together, kinda like 'Military Intelligence'..."
- Jerry

"Our musicís kind of about taking something ugly and making it beautiful"
- Jerry

"But bass players are the most important..."
- Mike

"Backstage is greatly overrated"
- Mike

"Hate those guys. We hate each other. Sometimes we'll get in our big Cadillacs and do drive-bys on each other's houses. We're like rival gangs."
- Sean(Regarding Soundgarden)

"We've mastered the art of making pretty music that makes you want to die"
- Sean

"There's nothing worse than talking about yourself to find out that you're not that interesting"
- Sean

"The difference for me is I just don't sleep on friends' couches anymore."
- Sean
